Microsoft Azure Express Route

Private connection to Azure - Increased reliability and speed - Lower latency - Direct connection to your WAN - Layer 3 connectivity

A connection you can rely on

For organisations whose business practice relies on transferring high volumes of data or resource draining applications, you need an unfailing connection, one where you won't experience delays due to high latency. This is where Azure Express Route comes in.

Express Route is your own private connection to Azure which bypasses the public internet, connecting your infrastructure directly to Azure data centres. With Azure Express Route, you will be able to establish a reliable, scalable and dedicated connection to Azure from your own data centre or through Sentia, providing you with high-security data transfer, as it bypasses the public internet with a throughput of up to 10 Gbit/sec.

Connectivity models

Through Express Route, you will have the ability to establish a connection between your on-premise network and Microsoft cloud in three different ways:

Cloud Exchange co-location

If co-located in a cloud exchange facility, you can order virtual cross-connections to the Microsoft cloud through Sentia's Ethernet exchange. We offer either Layer 2 cross-connections or managed Layer 3 cross-connections between your infrastructure, our data centres and the Microsoft cloud.

Point-to-point Ethernet connection

You can connect your on-premises data centres/offices to the Microsoft cloud through Sentia point-to-point Ethernet links, which can offer Layer 2 connections or managed Layer 3 connections between your site and the Microsoft cloud.

Any-to-any (IPVPN) connection

The Sentia IPVPN (typically MPLS VPN) offer any-to-any connectivity between your branch offices and data centres. Sentia offers you managed Layer 3 connectivity, with Express Route capabilities and feature identical across all three connectivity models.

Routing domains

With Express Route, you can establish a connection between your on-premises infrastructure and Microsoft cloud through three routing domains:

Private Peering

Azure compute services, namely virtual machines and cloud services, can be connected through the private peering domain. You can set up bi-directional connectivity between your core network and Azure virtual networks. This lets you connect to virtual machines and cloud services directly on their private IP addresses.

Public Peering

You can privately connect to services hosted on public IP addresses including VIPs of your cloud services through the public peering routing domain. Connect the public peering domain to your DMZ, and connect all Azure services on their public IP addresses from you WAN without connecting through the internet.

Microsoft peering

Express Route provides private network connectivity to Microsoft cloud services including Office 365. Infrastructure and platform services running in Azure often benefit by addressing network architecture and performance considerations. Therefore, we recommend enterprises use Express Route for Azure.

Next steps

Before deciding on an Express Route connection, you need to plan ahead, such as ensuring your appliances are capable of handling the increased bandwidth and how to distribute the Express Route between Azure services.

This is where Sentia can help. We will guide you through selecting and configuring the right connectivity model and routing domain for your business.
